What To Do (Or Not Do) While at Ganga or Any Water Body

  • Don’t throw object from pujas or havans in the river. Instead, put biodegradable materials such as samagri or flowers in plant pots or composting piles, and recycle all paper and plastics.

  • When placing offerings in Ganga or any river, make sure your offerings are 100% natural and biodegradable (no plastics). If your offering is in a plastic bag, make sure to take the offering out of the bag and recycle the bag. Ganga is considered a great purifier, but plastics kill all life in its waters and along its banks.

  • Don’t use Ganga or any river as a bathroom. Instead use a community toilet.

  • If you must use the Ganga or any river to do your laundry, don’t use detergents.

  • Start using cloth bags instead of plastic. Plastic bags are a huge source of pollution in the Ganga.

  • Don’t wear clothes made of animal furs or leather, as the toxic chemicals that are used to produce these materials are being dumped by the ton into Ganga and its tributaries.

  • Cremination on the banks of ganga as well as dumping of ashes in the Ganga must be prevented.

  • discharge of untreated urban wastes and industrial effluents from the cascade of large and medium cities located along the course of Ganga and its tributaries must be avoided.

  • Do not dump domestic and industrial waste in the river.

  • Chemicals from the industries should not dump in the river.

  • Avoid disposal of untreated urban, municipal waste/sewage as well as industrial effluents and industrial wastes.

  • Avoid disposal of ashes after crimination of dead bodies and partly burn bodies.

  • Avoid disposal of agriculture wastes, fertilizers, chemicals etc.

  • Avoid disposal of heavy waste generated during religious fairs on the banks of river Ganga.

  • Avoid disposal of huge amount of untreated waste contributed by countless tanneries's chemical plants, textile mills, distilleries, slaughterhouses, and hospitals.

  •  Laundry, washing, cleaning utensils, and brushing teeth should be avoided.
