Go Back

The total water requirement for the industries was around 11 km3/year for the base year 1996-97. It was observed that the pulp and paper, integrated iron & steel and textile sub sectors account for approximately 60% of the water requirement of the industry. For future projections, water requirement for each sub sector has been separately calculated. The overall water requirements for the year 2010, 2025 and 2050 have been estimated as 37, 67 and 81 km3 respectively. It needs to be stated here that till 1990s, Indian economy was on a low growth path.
