Environment is increasingly being
considered a legitimate water user. Many aquatic species require a certain flow
regime to live and breed. The environmental or instream
flow requirement (EFR) for a river is the minimum flow required to maintain
aquatic life. A range of methods are available to assess EFR. The decision on
which method to use is dependent on the type of river (e.g. perennial,
seasonal, flashy), perceived environmental importance, complexity of the
decision to be made, and difficulty of collecting large amounts of
